Since March 19, California has been under a stay-at-home order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and save lives. During these uncertain times, our daily routines have been interrupted to adjust to a new life, primarily confined at home, with a few “essential business” exceptions. Here are simple ways to help you get through this uneasy time.
- Spend quality time with your family and friends in your household. Get to know your loved ones. You can also host virtual gatherings right from your smartphone, laptop, or computer, to connect with those beyond your housemates. We are lucky to live in a time where technology easily and conveniently allows us to connect without physical presence.
- Develop a new skill or hobby and hone in on it. Stay productive and continue to develop yourself and your mind. There’s no better time than any to finally learn how to speak French, start practicing yoga, or become an expert in Excel or Powerpoint. Take advantage of online learning resources like Lynda, podcasts, and educational YouTube videos. Most books have digital versions if you can’t get your hands on the physical copy. Here’s a list of top self-help books.
- Clean and organize. Make your dwelling a place you want to be in by decluttering, consolidating your stuff, and making room for those things that truly spark joy. Tackle sections of your home or even a single drawer at a time, so it doesn’t become an overwhelming chore.
- Enjoy a home-cooked meal. Now you can find the time to learn how to cook or try a new recipe. There are tons of recipes you can find online or on Pinterest for free. Start eating healthier. MyFitnessPal can help you track your daily carb, protein and fat intake, so you can eat toward a weight loss goal. Mealime is a helpful app to find recipes and generate an organized grocery list for those recipes. Or try one of these recently shared recipes of favorite, legendary treats: Disney parks churros, the LAUSD coffee cake, or the DoubleTree chocolate chip cookies.
- Self-care makes a difference. If you’re not physically going in to work during this crisis, don’t let that stop you from looking and feeling your best. It can be as simple as getting dressed instead of wearing pajamas all day or taking a nap to give your body sufficient rest. Unplug from the news and social media once in a while to help mitigate any negative mental health impact and stress. California Governor Newsom provides helpful resources here.
- Travel from home. Take your pick on virtual museum tours around the world, enjoy a virtual ride on your favorite Disneyland or Harry Potter attraction, and visit a national park – all from the comfort of home.
- Stay active. Californians are allowed to take a walk outside but must wear a non-medical mask and maintain at least 6-feet apart from others while in public. Make sure to abide by your local guidelines. Although fitness centers and gyms are closed, you can still exercise with what you have. There are simple bodyweight movements you can achieve without any equipment such as push ups, air squats, planks, and burpees. You can find free workouts online and on YouTube. Download one of the many fitness apps.
